Quartz objects

In which material?

The shores of Lake Edwaerd revealed an abundant source of cut quartz. This rock is in the form of very hard crystals, translucent to white opal. This quartz is difficult to cut but was used as a raw material for the manufacture of tools.

Tools to do what?

The quartz tools were used to form objects made from softer material, such as bone (harpoon points, etc.) and certainly wood, although no piece of wood has yet been found to prove it.
These quartz flakes could be hafted or not, to cut or scrape...

Where does this quartz come from?

The Ishango people did not have to travel far to find their raw material: veins of quartz pebbles were brought by the river water close to the Ishango site.
